Life Plus Twenty
49
Sanity starved,
an infant beaten,
a woman carved,
your eyes red,
because a cop you worked with
and called a friend was dead,
shot twice in the head,
it was almost like insanity teasing,
and the court verdict
was anything but pleasing,
this man was brutal and unforgiving,
at a sentence hearing
he was just staring,
right at the judge, glaring,
but it was the last time,
he’d be cuffed and sneering,
because he was doing life plus twenty,
parole no less than twenty-five,
he’d never make it out alive,
but life plus twenty was a courtroom victory,
It was a courtroom fight,
that didn’t seem right,
that hollow victory was gloom,
and seemed sufficient for as long as it
stayed in the courtroom,
in the end it was simply not enough,
several surviving victims lost in a fog,
and one little boy who had
his eyes poked out,
was learning to handle his guide dog,
and a courtroom victory would still shout.

Frank, Sometimes I think you take my comments the wrong way. I do enjoy reading what you write and think you are a brilliant writer. If I didn't I would not comment at all. With that said :)....I think this guy should have had the book thrown at him. With no chance whatever for parole. Just locked away somewhere deep and dark. Great write!
Frank, Okay so I guess we're good then :) Have a wonderful day!
Frank - another wonderful poem that makes you feel as if you are in the middle of the action.
This poem was very alive! It creates a swirling of intense emotion that keeps one hooked. Voted up and awesome!
Frank, voted up, awesome, and interesting. Frank, you are very creative and your thinking process is genious. You have dipicted this life, this feeling very good my friend. Another class "A" poem.
you always keep me on the edge, while reading your grim stories Frank...stories that make my stomach churn yet can't hide the admiration i have for you and your chosen genre...
He He he . this is exactly the opposite way to be with those kinds of incidences , but it's my way of saying that Frank from DA Block has scored a great hit with this one. It's your best flow to date that can be placed anywhere , in a song a book or even a play , maybe you should check it again. "ANSWER TOMORROW" brethren Frank.
My vote, great work.
Bless.
Powerful poem here Frank. That's right about not making it out alive for the monster; killers and mutilators like him aren't generally looked on too favorably by their prison associates. No justice is justice enough for the victims loved ones sometimes. You must of felt this one very deeply cause it sure is an emotional poem.
If Agatha Cristie is to write poems, this is it.
What a great write Frank--but it made me remember---when I was in law school, I worked part-time my first year for an amicus board reviewing criminal appeals--After a while I couldn't do it anymore without wanting to throw up--the last one I read--was from an inmate father to tied his daughter up by her hair and beat her to death--it took three days for her to die--maybe this is too much reality for this forum--but there it is anyway
Another great one Frank. Voted up and awesome my friend.
I love your crime related poetry. Today's point is so vivid. Justice is never really that, it's just all society can do. Nothing can ever replace what had been taken, the pain caused, the damage done. Bravo.
Hi Frank
"and one little boy who had
his eyes poked out,
was learning to handle his guide dog,
and a courtroom victory would still shout"
I gasped when I read these words.
Voted up and awesome.
Have a good weekend.
A very emotional poem Frank. Doesn't it twist you up when even if he had received the death penalty that little boy also has a lifetime sentense. A victory for the court and case closed.
I know we must have a legal system and that the courts are preferable to uncontrolled vigilante justice...we know that...but sometimes just sometimes we want what we "feel" would be justice. Then as your poem so eloquently makes clear, "good court justice" does not seem right at all. Avery good read. Thank you.
I enjoyed the hub and agree wholeheartedly with phdast7. I note that the criminal sneered like the majority of prisoners who don't have any remorse.
Ditto Eddy's words: 'Brilliant' You held my attention to the end and what an ending! You weave a wicked tale with your poetry, Frank. Thanks for sharing your exquisite talent here! Voted up and awesome!
wow Frank I felt like I was there watching.. You are so great at this. poor little boy no eyes. I wanted to cry.
Awesome as usual..
